Best picks by need

One pick for each common need, with the trade-off that comes with it.

The unicorn

Vanicream Vanicream Shampoo

Perfect under both lenses, sold at Target, about $0.27 per wash, and made by an independent company with no recalls or lawsuits found.

Trade-off: Lathers less and conditions less than most shampoos.

Cleanest label

Everist Fragrance-Free Shampoo Concentrate

Perfect under both lenses. Waterless, so no preservative is needed, and it has no betaine, PEGs or quats.

Trade-off: A paste instead of a liquid, sold mainly online, and the US price is an estimate.

Shortest list, normal routine

Alaffia African Black Soap All-In-One, Unscented

Seven ingredients led by a mild glucoside cleanser. One 32 oz bottle is $17.49.

Trade-off: Soap-based and alkaline, and its holy basil extract is aromatic.

Shortest list of all

Radico Organic Reetha (Soapnut) Fruit Powder

One ingredient: ground soapnut fruit.

Trade-off: You mix it each time, it barely lathers, and it stings if it reaches your eyes.

Cheapest clean per wash

Dove (Unilever) Baby Dove Fragrance Free Moisture Wash

About $0.13 per wash for a 34 oz bottle with no plant extracts.

Trade-off: Made as a baby body wash, contains soap salts, and its labels disagree, so check the bottle.

Best performance evidence

SEEN SEEN Shampoo, Fragrance Free

The only shampoo with a controlled trial: 44% less shedding over six months.

Trade-off: Four times Vanicream's price per wash, and it drops to 92 under the stricter lens.

For dandruff

Head & Shoulders (P&G) BARE Sensitive Scalp Dandruff Shampoo

Eight ingredients with the proven anti-dandruff active zinc pyrithione.

Trade-off: That active is banned in EU cosmetics. Skip it if you don't have dandruff.

Zero plastic

Seek Bamboo Unscented Shampoo Bar

A clean bar with a mild glutamate cleanser, 98 under both lenses.

Trade-off: The cost per wash relies on the brand's own wash count.

Label loopholes

The tricks we kept running into. Each one is legal, and each one makes a label look cleaner or cheaper than it is.

Sulfates under other names

'Sulfate-free' and 'SLS-free' claims often mean the product swapped in a sulfate with a less familiar name.

'Fragrance-free' with aromatic extracts

'Fragrance-free' means no added fragrance ingredient. Plant extracts with their own scent and allergens can still be in the bottle.

Gentle names, harsh contents

Front-of-bottle words like 'extra gentle' and 'calming' are not regulated.

Trade names instead of ingredient names

US rules call for standard ingredient names. Trade-name blends hide what's inside and make a list look shorter.

Marketplace markups

The same product can cost several times more from third-party sellers.

Brand math on cost per wash

Bars, concentrates and powders quote how many bottles or washes they replace. None of these claims is independently tested.

Soap sold as an all-in-one wash

True soaps can be used on hair, but they're alkaline. Most need an acidic rinse to avoid a dull, tangly film.

Quiet reformulations

The listing and the bottle don't always match. Always read the bottle in your hand.

Ownership changes

A private-equity buyout often comes before cost-cutting reformulations.

How the grade works

Every product starts at 100. Points come off once per type of problem, not once per ingredient. The rules were written before any product was scored. Your red flags lens uses the table below. Consumer Reports strict also takes 4 points each for phenoxyethanol, quat conditioners and ethoxylated (PEG) ingredients.

About the data

Cost per wash assumes about 0.3 oz per wash; bars, concentrates and powders use the brand's own wash claim. Prices are regular prices seen on Sep 26, 2026. None of these shampoos has independent performance testing. Not graded: Prose and Minon. The original page also has a label checker and an ingredient glossary. Every label was re-checked against current brand and store listings on Sep 26, 2026.
